NRN ID

1. WHO ARE NRNS ?

“Non-resident Nepali” means a foreign citizen of Nepalese origin and this term also includes a Nepalese citizen residing abroad. “Foreign citizen of Nepalese origin” means a person who him/herself or whose father, mother grandfather or grandmother was a citizen of Nepal at any time and has subsequently acquired the citizenship of any other foreign country other than a member country of the South Asian Association of Regional Co-operation (SAARC). “Nepali citizen residing abroad” means a Nepali citizen who has been residing in any foreign country for at least two years engaged in any profession, occupation, business and employment except a Nepalese citizen residing in a member country of SAARC or serving in a diplomatic mission or consulate situated in a foreign country under the assignment of the Government of Nepal and pursuing studies in an academic institution in a foreign country. Family members of NRN can also register as NRN and obtain their ID cards.

2. WHY HAS THE GOVERNMENT RECOGNIZED THEM AND SOUGHT THEIR PARTICIPATION?

The affairs of NRNs are governed by Non-Resident Nepali Act, 2008 and Non-Resident Nepali Rules, 2009. The government has recognized NRNs and sought their participation for the following reasons:

1. To motivate Non-Resident Nepalese to take part in all round advancement of Nepal and enhance their attachment towards Nepal; and
2. To encourage their investment in Nepal.

3. FACILITIES EXTENDED TO NRNS BY THE GOVERNMENT OF NEPAL:

The government of Nepal has extended, among others, the following facilities to NRNs:

1. Issuance of Identity Card upon their application with necessary documents and fees
2. Right to open an account in convertible foreign currency
3. Investment can be made in convertible foreign currency
4. Repatriation of investment and profit earned out of investment
5. Right to run an industry or business
6. Purchase of land for residential purpose
7. Free visa (10 years) to Nepal up to card remains valid.

As per the decision of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Government of Nepal, the Embassy has started to issue digital NRN ID card instead of the handwritten/computer typed card. All the applicants are requested to mandatorily fill the application form for the digital NRN ID from the link given below:

Documents required to make application for a NRN ID card for Non-Resident Nepali :

1. Copy of Nepali citizenship certificate OR citizenship renouncement certificate.
2. Passport of current nationality, certificate of naturalization and their copies
3. Copy of Citizenship Certificate of father/mother/grandfather/grandmother or any other document that proves their Nepalese nationality
4. Documents showing proof of business, occupation or employment
5. Proof of address (Current address)
6. One digital copy of passport size recent photograph
7. Application Fees: £365.00.
8. Processing time the same day and postal application will take up to 7 working days (Please remember to enclose a self addressed return envelope).
9. The renewal of NRN ID card also require the same process, documents and fee.

The print-out of the online application form has to be submitted to the Embassy either electronically or in person after duly signing by the applicant.

Documents required to make application for a NRN ID Card for Foreign Resident of Nepali Nationality:

1. Nepali Citizenship Certificate and its copy.
2. Nepali Passport and its copy.
3. Documents related to business in the current country of residence.
4. Document/proof of employment in the current country of residence.
5. One digital copy of passport size recent photographs.
6. Application fees: £55.00.
7. Processing time the same day and postal application will take 2-3 working days (Please remember to enclose a self addressed return envelope).
8. The renewal of NRN ID card also require the same process, documents and fees.

The print-out of the online application form has to be submitted to the Embassy either electronically or in person after duly signing by the applicant.

The Card Payment (Visa Debit/Credit, Master Card Debit/Credit, All Maestro cards) is acceptable for the applicants who visit the Embassy in person. However, a Virtual Payment (Visa Debit/Credit, Master Card Debit/Credit, All Maestro cards) link will be sent to the applicant"s email for the applicants who send applications by post. Please do not enclose a postal order or a bank draft for the payment of visa fees now onwards.
